A Painting A Day Postcard from Holland is a project, in which I intend to paint a small ('postcard-size') oil painting each day, and post it to this blog. I will depict everyday objects, local fruits and dutch landscapes. In this way I hope to give visitors a day-to-day impression of my life as an artist in Holland.
Today this little portrait study I did for a portrait workshop I'm attending with dutch master painter Ralph Heynen. Painting on almost unprepared mdf board again...

Have been experimenting the last couple of weeks with painting on mdf panels without a gesso ground layer. I only seal the panel with a coat of acrylic varnish. This creates an absorbing ground, which feels like painting on canvas. Its easy to make grandients on this type of ground. Don't know if the painting will have 'archival quality'. The mdf is yellow colored, so I left some of it uncovered (yellow color shining through in the image), giving it a kind of unfinished sketchy look... (Watch this painting being painted on youtube.)

I gave painting demonstration last thursday, paintin this old bottle of beer. It was a very old bottle with a crooked neck...

Went outside to paint again today, after a long pause. I joined fellow artist Rene (http://painting-pleinair.blogspot.com/) who was painting near the city of Nijmegen (Holland.) I chose a view of the Ooipolder with this traffic sign. It was the only traffic sign I could find, because there is not much traffic there...
