Still life fruit pie

Painted this delicious little pie today with a raspberry on top. Painting raspberries is always a hassle, because of all the little spheres it contains. I didn't feel like painting every single one of them separately, so I chose a strategy with a lot of suggestion. I first indicated the tone and color of the raspberry with a general scumble of paint. Then tried to recognize globules in that, and only enhance what is already there. A video of this one will be available at youtube.com shortly...

Portrait-eyes study

Did this quick portrait study today, focusing on eyes only. Still a bit crooked. The eye on the left is too high, which particularly stands out when you tilt your head to the right, so that the face appears to be standing upright...

Still life with white pumpkin

Time again for a couple of small still life studies. I got these white pumpkins from friend and sailing-genius (Diederik Willemsen) so I decided to paint one. The pumpkin catches a lot of light and it is rather tricky to get the contrast between the light side and the ground surface large enough...

Portrait tone study

Was able to do a portrait session with a live model tonight. Didn't feel confident enought to paint yet, but next week I will. This evening I settled for black creta color sticks (which are quite nice). (Indicated size is approximate.)

Portrait study in profile

I thought I'd try a portrait painting again for a change. In this one I used a yellow imprimatura. I focused on the face, leaving the rest of the painting rather sketchy.. (Painted from deviant art reference.)

Portrait study with sleeping person

No time for a daily painting today, so I thought I'd post a page from my sketchbook. Still practicing to draw portraits. Have gained some fluency in the last couple of months, but likeness is still difficult. Don't know yet which way to go with these portraits, but I like Waterhouse a lot. Maybe copying some of his work would be a good start...

Still life-test with light bulb

Trying a new painting technique. Start with a colored underpainting and paint over that thinly. You can see the underlayer still shine through at the bottom of the painting. This bulb seemed a good subject for this...

This big tomato was staring me in the face at the grocery store today, so I had to make clear who is at the top of the food chain. Decided to paint it first..
