Still life with egg

Have been experimenting the last couple of weeks with painting on mdf panels without a gesso ground layer. I only seal the panel with a coat of acrylic varnish. This creates an absorbing ground, which feels like painting on canvas. Its easy to make grandients on this type of ground. Don't know if the painting will have 'archival quality'. The mdf is yellow colored, so I left some of it uncovered (yellow color shining through in the image), giving it a kind of unfinished sketchy look... (Watch this painting being painted on youtube.)

Still life with egg, 15x17? cm.

Go to www.postcardfromholland.com to see if this painting is still available.

thank you for the information about preparing mdf. i use 3layers of gesso on hardboard but prefer panel boards. But since I have only recently started making my own boards I'm always looking for more ideas. Love the painting!

This is really quite a lovely painting. MDF does create a nice and different support to paint on.
