Tomato study

Working on a white bowl with tomatoes for the exhibition in Persingen (Holland) on june 30th/july 1st. Had a bit of trouble with the reflections of the bowl, so I decided to make a study with a single tomato on a white plane. Will have to do some more of these this week I think...

Still life with pears

Not a postcard again today, but another painting for the exhibition in the church of Persingen (near Nijmegen, Holland). This painting was based on an older one I got back from a gallery. I decided to refine it a bit and improve the colors and contrasts. Though I didn't have the exact same pears anymore, I was able to buy some similar ones so I could work 'after nature'. The painting will be on display in Persingen, the last weekend of june...

Still life with apples, stage 5

Not really a postcard again today, but the final stage of the still life with apples I started 3 weeks ago. I left it to rest last week and added the final layer today. Keep seeing more things, but this should really be the last stage I think. Maybe I will cut a bit of white off the edges of the painting though. The painting will be on display at the exhibition in the church of Persingen (near Nijmegen, Holland) on june 30th and july the 1st.

Dark pear study

It has been some time since I last posted a daily painting. Have been working on still life paintings for the upcoming exhibition in Persingen (last weekend of june.) Yesterday my friend Rosalien presented me with a number paint tubes dating from the previous century. I tried, and the paint still seemed to work. I had some pears in my workshop, so I decided to paint this small pear-study. Hope to be able to do some more postings next week...

Still life with apples, stage 4

Day four in the still life with apples: today I added the stems to the apples and made the color of some apples more bright. Also I added some highlight to the apples (lightest 'white' reflecting part). Progress now is rather slow, not only due to the nice weather, but also because I now have to keep some areas dry (ie no paint). In this way I can keep the edges sharp: when paint runs over the edge into a dry area, one can polish it away again, as opposed to when two areas are covered with paint. But I hope the painting will be finished in one or two more layers. Monday I'll turn to refining the box again...

Still life with apples, stage 3

The third day of the still life with apples today. In this stage I added some structure to the paint using impasto medium. This works particularly well to mimic the structure of for instance wood. At the back end of the table I blurred the horizontal line that separates it from the back wall. This makes the box and apples look relatively more sharp and focused. Furthermore I corrected a mistake in the perspective and sharpened a few contours around the metal box. Hope to be able to work on the entire painting tomorrow, and maybe finish it... (This painting is not for sale yet).

Still life with apples, stage 2

Today the second layer of paint on the still life with apples I started yesterday. Today I tried to develop some detail, and I sharpened most contours. Need to add some more light and structure here and there tomorrow. Also, the apple in the foreground still looks a bit funny. Maybe it needs some more reflections on the dark side...

Still life with apples, stage 1

Have to paint a number of larger multi-layer still lifes in the weeks to come, so not so much time for daily paintings. Thought therefore it would be interesting to post the stages of these larger still life paintings instead, to show the development of a painting. Started today with this box with apples. The first layer of a larger painting looks a bit rough and sketchy compared to the smaller ones, because one has to work on more objects in a limited time. Today I only had 2 hours to paint because I'm expecting a visitor later on...
