Het Meer

Went to paint outside again with my friend and painter Gerieke Wijers. A rather large postcard today depicting 'Het Meer', near the Dyckgraaf van Wyck road in Nijmegen, Holland. The summery weather made the trees and bushes look rather happy..

Forest near Berg en Dal (Holland)

Went outside today to paint with fellow artist Henk van den Heuvel from Arnhem (See his weblog.) We picked a forest near Berg en Dal (Holland). Though there was a nice view down hill, I preferred to pick a detail from the forest. Turned out to be a rather gloomy scene, with some light on the leves though.

Glass vase

A small still life study again today. This time a glass vase which I picked up at second hand store 'Het Goed' in Nijmegen (holland). Made 2 of these, one which I'm going to further work on in a multi-layer technique. Hope to include this next week in the show at art dealer Warnars & Warnars (Naarden, Holland).

Bowl of eggs

No daily painting today, but a small still life painting which I finished today. I've been working on it the last couple of weeks. It will be on show at art dealer Warnars & Warnars in Naarden (Holland) from next week. The price for this one is 1200 euros (including my own frame).

Pond and tree

Went to Vlietberg road in the Ooijpolder area, near Nijmegen, Holland to paint today. There are many small ponds there hidden under trees. This painting shows one of them, with some overhanging branches.

House near Nijmegen harbour

Went to paint outside today with fellow artist Rene. (www.painting-pleinair.blogspot.com) We want to slowly move to painting in the town center of Nijmegen, but didn't feel confident enough yet to go there right away. So to start, we chose a secluded corner of town, near the bed of the Waal river and the harbour. There are some nice 16th century houses there.

What is this called?

This piece of fruit I bought at the Albert Heijn supermarket was labeled 'rambutan'. According to wikipedia however, a rambutan looks completely different. Does anyone know what the name of this fruit is? Tried to paint with a soft synthetic brush today. Completely different properties than the stiff hog bristles I use normally.

Riverside vegetation

A study of small landscape elements again today. Went to the Dijkgraaf van Wijck road again to paint the water and some vegetation at the river there. Today the sky was rather cloudy, and hence the water (background) looked greenish, instead of blue as in the last painting. Unfortunately, the waves on the water that I painted in initially, got a bit occluded as the bushy things in the foreground grew more dense..

Water near Dijkgraaf van Wijck Road

Fascinated lately with the surface of water and stuff that you can see in it. Due to the wavey reflection of shore vegetation and buildings one can often see both these features and the sky intertwined. This fragment of water and vegetation was painted along side the Dijkgraaf van Wijck road in Nijmegen, Holland.

Ooysedijk

Painted the view from the Batavierenroad into the Ooijpolder and the Ooysedijk (Nijmegen, Holland) again today. Unlike last time it was nice weather, but in the distance it still seemed a bit foggy. The painting turned out quite smudgy and with a lot of soft edges. Quite like this effect in a landscape. I think this is partly due to the home made gesso by local art supplies dealer Pro Art. This gesso is quite absorbant and contains a relatively small amount of acrylic binder.

Egg

Still working on the still life with eggs for art dealer Warnars & Warnars in Naarden (Holland). So I decided to paint a small study of an egg today. Because the brown/purple dark side of the egg is painted with rather transparent pigments, I started this painting with an acrylic half tone imprimatura, to prevent brushmarks from showing on that side. Will experiment more with this way of painting in the next weeks...

Well castle

Went to Well Castle yesterday, near my parent's village, to paint, and found this nice mirror image of a tree in the water near the castle...

Pear, frontal view

Today a study of this pear, in a rather unusual frontal view. I made it yesterday, in parallel to the view from my workshop window (see previous post). Had to take a pause now and then because the light on the church changed all the time. A good opportunity to try and work on two paintings at the same time. Will try to paint outside today, in my parent's village of Siebengewald (Holland)...

Passing clouds from my window

Today a landscape painting depicting some passing clouds as viewed from my workshop window. Guess we all have some clouds passing our workshops once in a while.. In the foreground we can see the St. Stevens Church of Nijmegen (Holland). Tried an acrylic brush with synthetic hair for this painting, to do the details (lines etc). Rene: it works quite well, thanks..

Pear-vanitas

Not much time for daily paintings today because I'm working on a still life with eggs for art dealer Warnars & Warnars in Naarden (Holland). Did manage to make a tiny study of a pear. This pear that originally featured in this painting, sat alone, drying in a corner of my workshop. I thought it would make a nice vanitas still life...

Apple study C

For all apple-lovers, an apple study again today. Tried brushes with synthetic hair instead of bristles this time. Hope to get the hang of this in the next 5 apples or so. Also worked on a larger painting with eggs but didn't finish it today. Had to go home early, because its time for Bach's Mattheus Passion early this evening...

Church of Persingen, Holland

Want to learn how to paint buildings, so I chose the church of the tiny town of Persingen (Holland) as a subject today. Unfortunately it turned out to be rather windy, so it was almost impossible to draw a straight line outside. Hence this rather whiggly church...
