Portrait study of a girl and landscape

Painted another portrait study today, this time a somewhat larger one. The dark part in the bottom right corner looked a bit like a field and trees, so I called it 'landscape'. Want to keep this painting for study purpouses...

Portrait study of a girl

Today I wanted to paint a portrait from life. Unfortunately, my model L. was ill, so we called the thing off. I decided to copy a painting from an art book instead. I changed the features a bit, enough to prevent copyright problems, I hope...

Still life with dill weeds, almost ready

The last couple of days I worked on the two still life paintings for publisher 'Artline-Holland'. They are almomst finished: only need to do some work on the background and some touching up here and there. This is the one with the dill weeds. (Now you can also see what the missing vegetable is...)

Evening landscape

Yesterday evening I had no plans, so I went outside to paint near the Waal river. I chose a spot near Nijmegen's powerplant. I had quite some difficulty to get the colors right. Maybe this painting can only be viewed in orange evening light, as it was painted there...

Landscape with farmhouse and shed

Went to paint outside today with fellow artist Ralf Heynen and a group of students. We painted at the banks of the Waal river in Nijmegen. I chose this farm house as a subject. The house was lit from the back by the sun, wich gave interesting light effects on the roof...

Still life with dill weeds

Today I started working on a second larger still life for my publisher (Art-Line Holland). The painting will be available as art print later this year. This one will be the counterpart for yesterday's tomato-painting. Unfortunately I didn't have enought time today to finish all objects. Hope to work on this some more tomorrow. Need to add the dill leaves to the bushy thing on the right, and the white space needs to be filled up. Can you guess what needs to be painted there?...

Developing a still life painting

Continuing the work on the still life with tomatoes and chives. Worked on the tomatoes mainly, intensifying the color and improved the volume. Also added more chives, and intensified the colors of the table top. Need to work some more on the reflections between the table top and the tomatoes. Hope to be able to do this tomorrow...

Still life with Tomatoes, Chives and Garlic

Working on a still life painting for art publisher 'Artline'. Initially the painting featured a knife (see the day before yesterday), but my publisher thought this was too dangerous for the kids. So in the final design I put a jar with garlic. Yesterday I painted the first stage of the painting. Hope to work on it some more next week. Need to add some more chives and the tomato stems. Also I used a brown imprimatura (brown colored surface to paint on) and this makes the colors look a bit smudgy I think. Won't do that again...

Sint Stevenskerk, Nijmegen

The day before yesterday I went to paint a city-scape with a group of artists. In the afternoon, fellow artist Rene and I managed to paint another one. This one is a view of the Stevens Church, seen from the Begijnenstraat, one of the narrow little streets in the medieval city center of Nijmegen...

Still life with Chives and Tomatoes

Time for a still life paiting again today. Until now, the daily still life paintings were limited to single objects. I want to slowly introduce more objects in these paintings and see if this works. Today I tried this more complex (and tasty) composition with chives and tomatoes. It was quite tricky to paint everything in a single session. Next time, I need to get up a bit earlier...

De Waag, Nijmegen

Went outside to paint today, with fellow artists 'Rene Plein Air', Ralf Heynen and Diederik Grootjans and a group of students from art centre 'Arttics'. We went to Nijmegen's Grote Markt square. I chose a window from De Waag as a subject. In this building dating from 1612, goods were weigted, for trade purpouses...

Waal Bridge and Cyclist

At yesterday's painting event in Nijmegen ('Portret van Nijmegen'), I was only able to paint one scene, because there was a time limit set. When walking around the city however, I noticed a few other minimalist views I'd like to paint. The views include buildings mainly, which can be nicely drawn using my new favorite painting tool: the ruler. Today I managed to paint Nijmegen's Waal Bridge (Waalbrug)...

Trashcan

Today I participated in 'Portret van Nijmegen', a one-day painting event in which painters make a plein air painting in the city of Nijmegen (holland). I decided to paint near cinema Lux and the public library. The trashcan on the orange wall of the library, with the library window on the right, seemed a nice subject. A nice detail is the soda pop can on the floor. With thanx to Diederik Grootjans and Rosalie Thomassen for organizing PvN, and to Rene for showing how to use a ruler for painting straigh lines...

View from Restaurant Belvedere

A nice foggy day today, perfect for painting a foggy landscape. I went to restaurant Belvedere, which is located in one of the watchtowers of nijmegen's (demolished) city wall. From this point one has a nice view of the Ooijpolder (flat area).
