A Painting A Day Postcard from Holland is a project, in which I intend to paint a small ('postcard-size') oil painting each day, and post it to this blog. I will depict everyday objects, local fruits and dutch landscapes. In this way I hope to give visitors a day-to-day impression of my life as an artist in Holland.

Thought I'd post an image of my setup today. The thing you see in the middle is my rotating easle. The board on which the painting is mounted is attached to the easle with a center screw. So the entire painting can rotate around its central axis... Today's painting is the one with the 2 apples...

Yesterday I painted a rough sketch of 2 apples using an old bristle. Because the hair of the brush were a bit out of shape (pointing in all directions, more or less), the painting featured all kinds of light spots. This for some reason created a nice illusion of light in the painting. I tried to replicate this effect today, in this one, but with less success. Must try that old brush again tomorrow...

I started a larger still life painting this afternoon, featuring a plate of apples. Tried a new way of painting (new for me): the sight-size method. In this way of painting one judges the changes to be made on the canvas from a distance of 4 or so metres away. At a distance it is easier to see differences between the subject and the painting in progress. Disadvantage is that one has to keep walking to and from the painting all the time...

No painting today but a page from my sketchbook. I've been drawing a lot of figure studies lately. This one is now on display in the monastery on the Van Oldenbarneveltstraat in Nijmegen, where I live (in the first-floor toilet.)
