Black cherry and passing cloud
Another study of a black cherry today. The keen observer may be able to see a passing cloud in the reflected window of my workshop, sitting in the highlight on the cherry.
A Painting A Day Postcard from Holland is a project, in which I intend to paint a small ('postcard-size') oil painting each day, and post it to this blog. I will depict everyday objects, local fruits and dutch landscapes. In this way I hope to give visitors a day-to-day impression of my life as an artist in Holland.

Started to work on a painting with a chinese bowl for my publisher. Want to put cherries in it, so I made this cherry-study today. Problem with black cherries on a light background is, that they are not much more than a black mass with some reflections in it. Will need to train some more this next week..
Had some mixed paint left from yesterday's nectarines, so I figured I could paint another one, this time on a light background..
Came back from a camping holiday in Brussels last friday. So no new paintings last week, unfortunately. Started today with 'daily' paintings again, finally. A study with two nectarines today. Tried two new synthetic brushes I orderd in the U.S. and applied rather thick paint...
Another chinese bowl study today. This time with yesterday's colors reversed (ie red and green). Maybe the colors in the final version will be a bit more pastel-like (softer). Tried soft synthetic brushes again today. This works quite well, with Pro-Art's gesso for a primer. Pro-Art is a local art store in Nijmegen (holland) where they sell a home made gesso based on acrylic resin and I believe pva glue. The gesso is rather porous compared to other ones.
Study with chinese bowl, red, 15x14 cm, oil on masonite.
Another postcard today, finally. I want to paint a number of paintings with chinese bowls for my publisher of posters. So today I decided to take this green bowl as a subject. The touch in this painting is a bit softer than usual, because I used a rather soft synthetic brush. Also I used only a tiny amount of painting medium today, so the paint is rahter opaque..
SoldJust can't stay away from apples. Today a student from Leiden visited my workshop, for some painting instructions. We decided to paint an apple together. This is my version...
Light apple study, 14x15 cm, oil on masonite.
After a few busy weeks, I've had some time today to paint a daily painting. I thought my favorite subject would be suitable: an apple. Didn't have too much time though, as I had to wave goodbye my friend A.L. who is going to India for a month..
Dark apple study, 15x17 cm, oil on masonite.
