Apple study B
Made this study of an apple yesterday. Want to be a really good apple painter. Will try to go outside this afternoon to paint a landscape too, as I'm behind one day on the daily painters page...
A Painting A Day Postcard from Holland is a project, in which I intend to paint a small ('postcard-size') oil painting each day, and post it to this blog. I will depict everyday objects, local fruits and dutch landscapes. In this way I hope to give visitors a day-to-day impression of my life as an artist in Holland.

Went to paint in Amsterdam yesterday with my dear friend A.L. We found a quiet spot (almost impossible) in front of the Jewish Historic Museum, with view of the bridge near the Hortus Botanicus. It turned rather foggy and cold during the day...

A very sunny day today, so a lot of bright colors outside. Went to the Dijkgraaf van Wijck road again, as the last painting there wasn't so successfull. Spent 2 1/2 hours on this one, which is rather much in such a bright sun. I guess I'm a bit of a vampire. View from the foot of the hill ('stuwwal') in the background.

Not much time to paint today, only one hour; have to do my taxes. Did a little study however this morning. Looks a bit funny because it was painted up side down. Glued a bottle to my easel such that I could view it looking down. Then painted it and afterwards turned around the painting to sign...
Bought this little old medicine bottle some time ago in an antique shop in 's Hertogenbosch, Holland. It looked a bit lonely sitting in this big white plane, hence the title.

Painted this foggy landscape with dark, gloomy colors yesterday afternoon. The somberness of it struck me and I wanted to paint it. The view is the Ooipolder, seen from the Batavierenroad in Nijmegen, Holland. Couldn't work as long as I wanted because it was so cooold. Need to get warmer clothes...

Today a trompe l'oeil painting with a pear hanging on a rope. Still trying to figure out how to paint the skin of a pear in a wet-in-wet technique. May be posting more pears in the weeks to come..

A second version of the chinese bowl, this time using a more oily paint. It's rather difficult to get the contours sharp and the surfaces homogeneous. Anyone have any good suggestions for painting bowls wet-in-wet?

A swift study of clouds today. The wind was rather strong, so I only had a few minutes to get the composition. Rather frustrating, that they blow over so quickly..

Went outside to paint yesterday with painter Rene. (See www.painting-pleinair.blogspot.com). Quite some interesting cloud formations to paint, above this horizon with a factory chimney. Unfortunately, we were caught in a wet hail/snow storm. We decided to finish our paintings anyway, so our paintings did catch a drop of water or two. When the board dried at home, some marks of waterdrops showed in the paint. I was able to remove most of them, however..
A cloud study in my home village Siebengewald, Holland (not germany). Painted this one on a very stormy day. Luckily, the ground was muddy enough to press in my easel, to prevent it from blowing away. Though the weather was rough, a large variety of atmospherical conditions and colors could be seen in one image, from the clear blue sky in the top, to the foggy clouds in the distance..

A small study of a plum, from the grocery's on the Ziekerstreet in Nijmegen (Holland) today. Also got some good hints on alla prima painting from the masterful painter M. Collier. Will be trying those tomorrow...
In the morning, I made this study of a pommegrenate. Will post a series of fruit studies with white background in the coming days.
Grey, rainy day today, but decided to go outside anyway, for a landscape study. A view of Nijmegen (Holland) from the far side of the Waal river today. Tried to paint the clowds as good as possible, but they turn out to be rather difficult. Fore one, they blow over so fast... Maybe it would be a good idea to make a few studies specifically of clouds.

Another study high on the value scale. Today a red and yellow Elstar apple with a dent on one side. Another step to improving my alla prima painting (=painting in a single session) skills. Used a panel oiled out with a lineseed oil/alkyd mixture. This allows some masking of the brush marks where necessary.
No time to go outside today, four appointments in one day is a bit too much for a painter. Did find some time inbetween however, due to one rather short appointment. Enough to make a study of this chinese bowl...

This mysterious building (power house maybe) on the river dike near Bemmel, Nijmegen, has 3 green windows painted in a glow-in-the-dark color. Started painting late in the afternoon, finished when the sun was setting..

Little house between trees on dike and road, near restaurant sprok, Bemmel. (Near Nijmegen, Holland). Despite the clear, sunny weather, there was a bit of a fog in the distance, probably due to the swampy surroundings. Hence the blue-purplish colors.

Have to do my taxes today, but couldn't stop myself from making a small painting on this sunny day. This one was painted on the bank of the river Waal, near Nijmegen, Holland.

Clowdy outdoor study of the Dijkgraaf van Wyck Road, just outside the city of Nijmegen, Holland. The painting process was thoroughly scrutinized by my good friend Diederik Willemsen.
