This week the turkish grocery store in the Houtstraat (Nijmegen, Holland) offered clementines with green leafs still on them. The green contrasts nicely with the bright orange of the clementine skin...

Today this test for trying some new atmospheric effects to make the object look less flat. The object was painted under two artificial lights (warm and cool), with a warm light on the easel. So the painting looks best under a warm light....

Hope to be posting some more small sketches again. Today I tested a canvas (as opposed to the usual wooden panels) to paint on. On canvas one can very easily achieve a soft touch. This one has a very fine weave, enabeling detailed work like on panel. (Also watch the youtube movie.)

I'm feeling a bit ill today and I stayed at home tonight to rest. So I decided to make a tiny charcoal sketch of this stern looking 19th-century gentleman (from russia.) I used charcoal shavings to create a mid tone back ground. Then draw with vined charcoal and erase the lights..

A test-painting of the red/pinkish unknown flower. This time I tried to partly paint the flower using a transparent pigment (alizarine crimson) in order to obtain more saturated (bright) colors. Turns out to be rather difficult to control though, compared to opaque paint. But the colors are indeed much brighter...

Woking on a number of larger still life paintings again, trying to encorporate some looseness of touch in the paintings. This one has rather cool colors, due to the particularities of the light in my new studo in the bottelstraat. The light on the subject tends to be a bit bluer than the light on the easle, making the colors of the painting seem a bit too cool for my taste. Need to fix this problem somehow. (Ideas are welcome.)
