Still life with white objects

Painted at our exhibition in 'De Refter' yesterday, for the last time. Have been thinking about light in paintings a lot lately. So I decided to make a study with white objects. (Almost) No color, only light in this way. I decided to use an 'impressionistic' touch. Notice how the chapel light colors the white objects (green of the small cylinder vessel on the right versus the purple of the shadows)....

Miniature apple

Time for a couple of small still life studies again. Today I thought I'd try a very small painting. I had to buy a number of new small brushes for this because I usually do not work this small. So here it is, my smallest painting ever: 5x5cm (2x2 inches)...

Ooi polder and windmills

Went oudside again yesterday afternoon, to make a quick landscape sketch. I decided to paint the view from the Belvedere restaurant in Nijmegen. The weather was very clear, so I could see the church of Persingen (center of the image) and even a few german windmills (for making electricity). On such a small painting however, these could only be represented as a series of white dots on the horizon...

Waal River Bank

Went outside yesterday to make a few quick sketches. This is the second one. Had to hurry, because the clouds drifted away rather quickly, due to the wind...

Waal River and Boat

Went outside this morning to make a few quick sketches. There was quite a stiff wind outside, so I had a difficult time keeping my gear from blowing away. Also of course, the light changes very rapidly all the time. So I could make only a few quick sketches. I'll post the second one tomorrow...

Refter, Ubbergen

Yesterday, I painted outside, near the chapel of 'De Refter' (Ubbergen, Holland), where I have an exhibition. This staircase of roofs is part of the old boarding school staff quarters there...

Nijmegen, Van Spaen Street

Went outside to paint yesterday with fellow artist Rene. We walked around in Nijmegen a bit and ended up in a 19th century neighbourhood. A nice part of town, with lots of trees, and lots of cars. There were a lot of details to paint in this scene, so the result turned out a bit fuzzy, due to the limited time we had...

Nijmegen, Waal River

A foggy, grey day yesterday, which makes the landscape look blue-purple in the distance. The setting sun partly colored the sky orange. This view of the Waal river near Nijmegen, was painted from the hill near the Batavieren road...

Chinese bowl

Today this chinese bowl in Refter-light. Had a hard time making the white of the bowl look light, compared to the floor. Both were flooded with sunlight...

Sugar Bowl

In the chapel of 'De Refter' where I am painting in the weekends, the light is very diffuse. Therefore, objects cast no strong shade there. I wanted to paint from live objects anyway (not from photo), so I decided to paint this sugar bowl. Due to the diffuse light, the painting is high on the tone scale everywhere.
